Rubidoux (pronounced /ˈruːbɨdoʊ/ ROO-bə-doh) is a census-designated place and an unincorporated community in Riverside County, California, United States. As of the 2000 census, the population was 29,180. The community's name refers to Louis Robidoux who settled in the area in 1843. Of French Canadian origin, his grandfather migrated from Quebec to St Louis, Missouri, where his interest in the fur trade expanded to become the family business. Louis and his brothers offically became US citizens after 1803 when St Louis officially became part of the United States. Robidoux was also a naturalized Mexican citizen who had served as Alcalde of Santa Fe. The city of Rubidoux resides on part of what was once Rancho Jurpa, the Robidoux family ranch. All current descendants of Louis spell their surname Rubidoux.
