We live in a digital age - not a week goes by without the launch of another shiny piece of technology that promises to make our lives safer, cheaper and easier.

One of the biggest sellers in the last decade has been the smartphone.

But, It is not only phones that are becoming smarter - an increasing number of common household device, such as lightbulbs, will become smarter.

This is the idea of the “smart home” and the world of “home automation”. And it is thought that, in the next decade, it is these smart devices that will become huge sellers.

A smart device is a device that can connect and communicate with other devices wirelessly - mostly through apps that can be used on a smartphone.

This article looks at smart products from the perspective of college students.

92% of college students in the U.S. own a smartphone.

80% of students live in rented accommodation - either on or off campus.
